Saying goodbye to the Miracle Blanket

As Avery is now 15 weeks, it was well time to try putting her to sleep without using the Miracle Blanket. As mentioned previously, this swaddling blanket was a present from Amy who nicknamed the resulting arrangement as the "Baby Burrito". But really, Avery had been sleeping through the night for approximately the past two months and I wasn't very keen on what would happen when we stopped using the blanket. I was also nervous because of the problems the Keans had with Daniel once they stopped - what was it? He didn't sleep through the night again until he was 10 months???

Anyway, given that Avery had started to work at least one arm or one leg out of the blanket for the past couple of nights, I figured it was time to make the change. So last Friday night we gave it a try - putting her in a sleep sack instead. And it really wasn't too bad!! Since then she has woken up fussing a couple of times in the night, but usually putting her soother back in her mouth helps her to go straight back to sleep. That is, until last night...I am not sure what happened, but she more or less woke up every 3 hours again, just like when she was a really newborn. I ended up feeding her each time and then rocking her back to sleep. I have a couple of theories - one is that this is her 3-month growth spurt, but a couple of weeks late, and the other is that she really didn't like the spicy Thai red curry chicken I made and had for dinner two nights in a row! I am hoping that whatever the reason, it is just a very short phase and we will go back nice sound sleeps very soon. I am not sure how well I will be able to handle sleepless nights again, now that I have gotten used to the luxury of many hours in a row! :)

P.S. An update on the passport experience...I am fairly certain I received both Avery's and my passport within a week of going to the Gatineau office. So once again, I highly recommend going there if you need your passport in short order.

Psst...they sleep more during growth spurts, not less. ;)

Sorry to hear about the somewhat sleepless night. This post just reminded me how scared I am of being sleep deprived again. Thanks a lot Alyssa!

Oh Kev - babies are easy! At least that's what you always say!! Also, they sleep more during growth spurts for a day or two followed by eating more for a day or two (hence the lack of sleep).

Nicholas has also been getting out of his miracle blanket quite a bit over the last couple of weeks - I thought it was mostly due to the heat the last couple of weeks, but he's been doing it since it's cooled down as well... I tried to put him down without it a couple of times, but it's just so easy when he's in it that I got lazy trying and just put him back in it... I will have to try again, I suppose...

Avery looks awesome! Looks like she's doing really well and getting super strong! Nice work Lys!

ummm, i'm going to cast my vote with no, babies do not sleep more during growth spurts. that is nonsense. they sleep less cause they are hungry and feeding all the time. wow. amy really was nice to you i think kevin if you do not know that. unless that winky thing means you were just kidding? i'm not sure.

ps. i am crossing my fingers for avery to pass through this "phase" if we can call it that after one night quickly. 10 months of sleep deprivation is not fun!

I'm sorry to hear your time with the Miracle Blanket has come to an end. I can't take responsibility for what happens after a baby is no longer using the blanket...but c'mon, I got you through the first few months!

We were so lucky with Liam that he transitioned very easily into the Grobag. I will let you know how the transition of getting rid of the Grobag goes (although I just bought him a new one that lasts up until 36 months!)

Hope the next few nights get better!

he he Kev, you make me laugh!

I have to agree with Dana...either you are a little spoiled by Amy (I am sure that will change with #2) or you were kidding...
Though, come to think of it, Grant can't seem to remember how much Natasha was waking up at night, so perhaps it is just men 'sleeping through' it...

I can't wait to get a good nights sleep...maybe in 4 years!!

well, the trend of waking up at least once has continued for the past few nights...but I suppose it's what parents (at least the mom-type parents) should expect to go through! :)

And Amy, I certainly appreciate you getting us through the first 3 months with a remarkable amount of sleep!!! :)

I've spoken to Amy and we both agree that Liam definitely slept more during his growth spurts so there you have it. Guess all you folks are just unlucky. :)
