Today Rory and I participated in the 2008 City Chase, taking place in Ottawa and Gatineau. It was a pretty good time and we did fairly well considering our general state of unfitness. I believe we came in 88th out of 340 teams, and were about the 6-7th place all-female team. Hey - we'll take our victories where we can get them! Not quite as good as in 2006 when we were the 3rd all female team and 29th place, but really, sometimes I wonder how well we could do if we were ever actually in shape! :)
Some of the fun things we did included a disc-golf challenge in JC Park, walking on stilts, fencing, batting and catching, and shotting cans with a paint ball gun. We really didn't do any of the crazy checkpoints this year, like eating gross stuff, touching spiders or canoeing on the river. On the one hand, I regret that the checkpoints we did were pretty tame, but on the other hand I appreciated that we weren't particularly dirty or wet at any point. It was a really nice day for the race, though we did have to make sure to drink enough water once the sun came out.
A little funny...after the race Rory and I were joking about "when we go to the World Championships in Morocco" (which we were going to get to by having our names drawn out of a hat instead of winning a local race). We had been told that the race for Worlds lasts 40-72 hours, rather then the 6 hours of today's race. Considering that we were basically dead after finishing at around 5 hours today, I thought 40-72 hours might be a bit much. In response, Rory said, "we might need to stretch first". hehehehehe
Thanks to all of the people who helped us out with the clues and finding checkpoints, etc - Greg, Dave, Kevin, Bonnie and Catrina. Thanks to Tim and Sandy for coming over today to help out around the house and look after Avery. I sure hope I didn't miss anyone! :)

Great photo and good finish. Congrats Alyssa!! Not bad for a new Mom on Mat leave.

UPDATE: While Rory and I did finish 88th(ish), as per the more official results it seems as though we were actually about the 15th all-female team. Oh well, something to shoot for next year.
Also, I should have mentioned that Rory was stellar in completing many of our challenges. She ended up doing many of the harder parts of the checkpoints, in some cases because of luck of the draw and in others because it was clear that she would be better at them - and she really rocked! So thanks for being a great partner Rory! :)
